In the background of Daytona Speedweeks, the first NASCAR championships of 2016 will be determined after seven races and nine nights in the World Series of Asphalt at New Smyrna Speedway.
The high speed half-mile is located just 10 miles south from Daytona International Speedway and has long been a popular venue for racing die-hards and for short trackers to test their skills in advance of The Great American Race.
The event showcases daily features for Super Late Models, Pro Late Models, Tour-Type Modifieds, Florida Modifieds and Sportsman. The NASCAR K&N Pro Series East will also start their season at NSS during the course of the World Series of Asphalt and the overall event runs from February 12-20.
The first six Super Late Model races at the track will be 35-laps in length and featured on the undercard for six of the first seven nights, all leading up to the 100-lap Bruce Gowland Memorial on Saturday, February 20, which will serve as the main event of the night and the championship race for the division.
Several of the top Super Late Model drivers in the country, including Steve Wallace, Stephen Nasse, Ty Majeski, Spencer Davis and Zane Smith are expected to compete in at least one of the races and many of them will compete for the World Series championship.
Smith became the 14th different World Series Super Late Model champion in 14 years, defeating Garrett Jones by three points. He joined Dick Trickle, Mark Martin, Pete Hamilton and David Rogers as titleholders.
Now he looks to make history by becoming the only repeat champion in Super Late Model division history.
“We had a lot of fun last year, and it’s a great way to test where you’re at because the competition is so good,” Smith said. “It’s a fun race track and we expect to have a good showing down there.”
In advance of his K&N East debut on Sunday, West Phoenix winner Todd Gilliland has also joined the event. He will be joined by defending Florida Governors Cup winner Cole Anderson. Fellow K&N rookie and former New Smyrna winner Harrison Burton will also be splitting time between his Super Late Model and Pro Car.
For just the second time in event history, the World Series of Asphalt will also have a free online streaming broadcast powered by Speed 51 and streamed on FansChoice.tv. The schedule for the World Series can be found below.
