Patrick Starpoli picked up an early season Super Late Model victory on Saturday night at Citrus County Speedway.

“It’s the kind of night you dream of having when you strap into one of these cars,” Starpoli said in Victory Lane after winning the race.

Naturally, it was a spirited drive from the University of Miami graduate and doctor of ophthalmology — a one of a kind in stock car racing. Starpoli is a resident physician at Aventura Hospital in Aventura Hospital in Florida.

Starpoli started fifth in the 13-car field and quickly won a four-driver battle for third between Wayne Anderson, Keith Roggen and Jesse Dutilly. Anderson eventually got the spot back with the pair chasing down leaders George Gorham Jr. and Ricky Anderson.

Following a Lap 15 caution, Starpoli made his move, passing Anderson and pressuring Gorham for the lead on Lap 18. The battle lasted just a single lap and Starpoli never surrendered the top spot for the remainder of the 50-lap main event.

Wayne Anderson finished second after a tough battle with Gorham over the final 15 laps. Ricky Anderson eventually took third from Gorham, and beat Keith Roggen in a side-by-side battle to the line at the end of the race.
