Matthew Craig holds off Bubba Pollard, Brandon Setzer in Throwback 276

Matthew Craig held off a late race charge from Bubba Pollard and Brandon Setzer to win the Super Late Model portion of the CARS Tour Throwback 276 on Saturday night at Hickory Motor Speedway.

When the caution unfurled for debris on Lap 113, Craig, Pollard and Setzer lined up as the race leaders for the remaining 15 laps of the event, but it quickly came down to emerging rivals Craig and Pollard.

Craig was able to clear Pollard on Lap 114.

From there Pollard continued to take shots at Craig from both the inside and outside lane with little success. That allowed Setzer to catch Pollard for second, and complete the pass for the runner-up position as Craig coasted to his first CARS victory of the season — and one that extended his championship lead over defending titlist Jared Fryer.

“It was really awesome,” Craig said of a victory that came in a Robert Hamke retro paint scheme. “The way we won it was probably the best thing. Nobody has beaten Bubba for a while now. I think that feels pretty good. It shows to everybody that we are here to play and ready to run the big races. My car was starting to get tight free in and center. I had to move up in Bubba’s lane to run. He wasn’t good on the bottom. I was taking his lane and running where my car was little better. I think taking his lane helped out a lot. I think he couldn’t get roll speed through the middle as I was blocking that lane.”

As the field made its way down pit road on the cool down lap, Craig’s father, Jeff, made an unkind gesture to Pollard. Once he exited the vehicle, Pollard began to throw punches at Craig’s father until the fight was broken up by series officials and local law enforcement officers.

Pollard had no comment about the situation on pit road.

“I’m not really sure,” Craig said about his run-in with Pollard. “I felt like I never roughed him up. He started roughin’ up and roughed me up all the way to the checkers. I was able to stay out front of him. We had some PASS races where I roughed him up and he roughed me up. I don’t know. It’s a little rivalry going on.”
