Dawson Sutton lays down big lap en route to All American pole

Jason Reasin

Back home in Nashville, representing the colors of the University of Tennessee, Dawson Sutton set fast time for the prestigious All-American ‘400’ at Fairgrounds Speedway and laid down the fastest lap at Fairgrounds Speedway in two years.

Sutton, driving the No. 26 for Rackley WAR, will lead the field to green alongside the most dominant driver and team in the discipline in Cole Butcher in the Donnie Wilson Motorsports No. 28 on Sunday afternoon in Music City USA.

“It’s nice being home, back in Vols country,” said Sutton on the TrackTV broadcast. “My team brought me a really good race car. P1 in qualifying here, but, you know, 300 laps is a long race tomorrow. Hopefully, we can put everything together. Just maximize every lap and hopefully be there at the end tomorrow.”

Sutton is a year removed from leading 164 of the 300 laps in a race ultimately won by Jake Garcia. This year, Garcia crashed in practice due to a mechanical failure and did not return to the track on Saturday. That’s one less hurdle for Sutton to overcome on Sunday.

What would this win mean?

“That would mean everything, you know. I feel like we were really close last year. Hopefully, we can put the last 10 laps together. That’s what matters at the end of the day.”

Dylan Fetcho, Stephen Nasse and Carson Brown are the remaining top-5 in the time trials.
