Approved Body Configuration Committee expands to include chassis oversight

The Approved Body Configuration Committee that oversees competition safety and development over Super and Pro Late Model bodies have expanded to include a similar committee that oversees chassis development.

The press releases states ‘the new division (consists) of existing members with the exception of chassis OEMs’ but didn’t detail the exact dynamic. In part, that’s because it’s still being finalized.

There will be two-to-three chassis manufacturers that have non-voting membership at any given time but the meetings will be open to any manufacturer to ensure transparency and open dialogue.

ASA STARS promoter Marty Melo is the non-voting chairman and is joined by Five Star Bodies vice president Corey Schultz. The question will then be asked ‘why is a bodies developer on the chassis committee?’

  1. It creates overlap and continuity between the body and chassis committees
  2. Five Star, which has no stake in chassis development, is willing to assist resources to assist the industry’s initiatives

The voting members are the same as the ABC Body panel:

  • Tim Bryant, Southern Super Series and Five Flags Speedway
  • Todd Thelen, ASA STARS National Tour
  • Freddie Query, veteran racer, crew chief and technical director
  • Brent Roy, Speedway 660
  • Tim Huddleston, CARS Tour West
  • Dan Garber, Northwest Super Late Model Series
  • Kip Childress, CARS Tour

From the press release:

“(This) marks a significant step forward in the Committee’s commitment to advancing consistency, performance, and driver safety across the sport. By establishing clear standards and rigorous oversight, the ABC Committee aims to align teams, builders, and sanctioning bodies under a unified framework for excellence in chassis construction and regulation.

The ABC Committee’s expansion underscores its ongoing dedication to innovation, transparency, and safety within the motorsports industry. Additional details about the committee’s guidelines, and rollout timeline will be shared in the coming months with its first scheduled meeting May 6.”
