Fun in the sun is on the horizon this weekend when round eight of the CARS Tour visits Myrtle Beach Speedway. Always a fun event off the track, the BakerDist.com Honeywell 200 weekend will kick off with the 2nd Annual Fairways & Straightaways golf tournament on Thursday September 15th.  Drivers, teams, and fans are eligible to participate in the tournament at the Hackler Course of Coastal Carolina University. Starting Friday all teams will focus on one thing until the final checkered flag falls; tire conservation. The .538 mile track is the most abrasive surface on the circuit and rewards those drivers who have the most rubber on their Hoosier race tire at the end of the event. The racing may seem slow and steady to the drivers behind the wheel, but from the fan perspective it looks like the pack racing that one would see at Daytona and Talladega. Knowing when to make a push to the front, not getting stuck in traffic, and racing the tire compound and not your fellow competitor are all key factors in winning the CARS Tour palmetto tree trophy.

QUOTES;

Defending His Beach:

Last season Sam Yarbrough raced in a single CARS Tour event at his home track of Myrtle Beach Speedway and won. The Myrtle Beach, SC native will look to defend his Late Model Stock win from a year ago this weekend; however, this year Yarbrough hasn’t had as much track time and isn’t leading the track’s championship points like last season. Despite that Yarbrough feels that he can stack up against the series best and be able to repeat if things fall into place.

“I wasn’t able to run for the championship this year at Myrtle Beach just for the fact we have been so busy with other ventures we couldn’t commit to every race. With that said, the times we have raced there we’ve won, so it would be foolish of us not to run with the CARS Tour there. We’ve got some big races planned this fall and the level of competition the CARS Tour provides will give us an indication on how we stack up against our competition. My team and I just wrapped up a two day test getting ready for this race, so I feel like I’ve got a car that can get the job done again this weekend.” #20 Sam Yarbrough – Robert Elliott Trucking Ford Late Model Stock Car

Short Track Sponsor Relationship Done Right:

For the last several seasons Gus Dean has partnered with his sponsor, Baker Distributing Company, to host customers, employees, and associates at the CARS Tour race at Myrtle Beach Speedway. This season is no different for the Dean Racing team, they will host Baker Distributing personnel and Honeywell associates for a day of ride-alongs with their sponsored driver as well as race day activities. For Dean it’s an opportunity to showcase what a short track racing team like his can offer a company like Baker and Honeywell not only on the track but off of it as well.

“This is always a big weekend for us and all of our sponsors. We can’t thank Baker Distributing, Honeywell, Gree, and Cab Installers enough for their continued support. My team has always made an effort off the track to give the most we can to our sponsors. Myrtle Beach Speedway is one of my favorite tracks and I feel like we’ve got a good game plan in place heading into the weekend. It’s one of those tracks you have to strategize and save your tires at the end without having too much ground to make up to the leaders at the end. Hopefully we’ll put on a good show for all the fans and my sponsors in attendance this weekend.” – #56 Gus Dean – Bakerdist.com Chevrolet Super Late Model.

Good Times with Golfing Away From the Track:

For the second year in a row the CARS Tour will host the “Fairways & Straightaways Golf Classic” in Conway, SC on Thursday September 15th at the Hackler Course located on the campus of Coastal Carolina University. Registration is at 1pm with the fun set to start at 2pm with a shotgun start around the 18 hole course. Race fans, teams, drivers, and sponsors are all encouraged to participate in the tournament to have some fun away from the track. The cost for a team of four is $240 and individuals play for $60; bragging rights will be priceless.

“This was a fun event last year. We had teams, drivers, our officials, and even a few folks from the track play. It’s a great opportunity for all of us to get together away from the track and let loose a little. Even if you’re not much of a golfer it’s still worth coming out and playing. We’d like to grow events like this and do more and more of them to show everyone it takes more than the time at the track to be successful a racing series.” Chris Ragle – CARS Tour Director of Operations
