Peyton Sellers claims seventh South Boston Late Model championship

Carter Langley won the 150 lap season finale

Carter Langley won the 150-lap season ending battle but Peyton Sellers emerged victorious in yet another season long war.

Langley, the 2023 South Boston Speedway champion won the season ending race at the Virginia bullring while Sellers claimed a seventh Late Model Stock championship at his home track, tying him with David Blankenship for the most all-time.

Langley led most of the early stages of the race, conceded the spot to Mike Looney from Laps 60 to the Lap 100 break and retook the spot shortly after the restart.

“When we came back here for the July 4 race, we had a new clip on here and had to figure it out,” Langley said in Victory Lane. “We haven’t raced much this year but the end of the year 150 lapper is one that we have circled.”

Looney just didn’t have enough car to hold off the reigning champion when it was time to quit saving tire.

“It was a good race for us,” Looney said. “Everyone was saving a little bit in that first half and I thought I was saving a lot. But you get a long break and with the heat cycle, you don’t know what it will do. It fired off tight. Carter made a good adjustment and wrapped the bottom good. Congrats to them. We made it the whole year without crashing the car too so that’s good.”

Sellers entered the night with a 26-point lead over Blake Stallings and clinched easily with a third-place finish.

“To grow up watching David Blankenship, because this is our home track, and to be in the same sentence as him is really special,” Sellers said.

Sellers was quick to thank dad Burt, his spotter, and brother H.C., his crew chief all these years but more than anything else, he was a little peeved that third was all he had on Saturday.

“We don’t come here to finish third,” Sellers said, “but it’s a testament to Mike and Carter and thinking about the championship is hard right now because I think we got beat by Hoosier a little bit. Our setup didn’t respond to it tonight.

“But to focus on the championship, to do this here in unbelievable. God has blessed me with a lot of opportunities, and a lot of friends along the way, to help us work on these cars and get them driving right.

“I don’t see myself as a David Blankenship or anything but whether you’re a Peyton Sellers fan or not, I hope you respect that we’ve come down here for so long and supported South Boston, Halifax and this community. It’s a special place and I love being a part of it. Clarence’s Steakhouse came on board a long time ago now and put a lot of trust in me. Danville Toyota is right there with them.”

The only major incident on the night came on Lap 9 when Kyle Dudley tagged Stallings with Stacy Puryear and Jeb Burton piling into it. The crash stuffed the rear end on the R&S Stallings car and ripped the right side off the Sellers Burton car.

Sellers’ championships have come across the 2004, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2024 seasons, two of which produced NASCAR national championships too.
