A driver competing in the Southeast Limited Late Model Challenger event at Myrtle Beach Speedway in South Carolina was killed following a two-car crash on Friday afternoon.

Jackie Ward, 56, died when he was involved in a two-car incident on the third lap of the 50-lap race.  The track confirmed the news via its social media channels on Friday night..

“Tonight we lost a fellow racer and a great friend of ours at Myrtle Beach Speedway. Jackie Ward was a part of the racing community and our family at the speedway, he will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, pit crew, friends, fans and fellow racers.”

The incident took place in Turn 1 according to speedway director of sales, marketing and announcing Mike Neff.

The collision happened around 4:45 p.m. and Ward died shortly after in the hospital at 5:32 p.m., according to Horry County Chief Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard. An autopsy is scheduled for Saturday to determine the exact cause of death.

The speedway is hosting the first of its two-weekend Myrtle Beach 400 event. More information will be provided as it is released.

    Jackie had an enlarged heart and had a “widow maker” heart attack coming out of turn 4. He passed away before he hit the inside wall and bounced back up on the track into turn 1 where he collided with Travis. RIP my friend!
