11 PM UPDATE: Three drivers fail tech.

Qualifying at Martinsville took place in a group format with Stacy Puryear ultimately securing the pole for the Late Model Stock race in Virginia Saturday night.

Lemons Jr., who qualified second, said starting on the front row is an advantage this year. He said tire strategy will be important now that it’s left up to the teams.

Puryear said winning the pole is “one of the greatest days” of his racing career. “It’s an awesome feeling to sit on the pole,” Puryear said.

Lemons said for him, it’s been an off year for him. “We put our heads down in the past month,” he said of gearing up for Martinsville. He added that the dew in Martinsville plays a big factor in racing at the paperclip.

Puryear knew he had a fast car, but didn’t expect to win the pole. “I am still amazed and very thankful.”

Puryear and his family wore gold lettered shirts, and spoke out about childhood cancer. “To see all those little kids with cancer, it breaks my heart. We need to spend more time and more effort on trying to find a cure for cancer.” He said to be able to come to a race track, not have an ailment and do what you love is a blessing, and not to take life for granted.

MOTORS:

And… Short Track Scene Twitter followers wanted to know which motors everyone is running, and we got most of them. CU is the Chevy Upgrade crate motor, known as the spec motor, and the HE stands for the Herrington motor. People are curious about which motor drivers are running in terms of competition advantage or disadvantage.
