Connor Hall won his first race and Matt Waltz won a championship.

Those were the stories from championship night at Langley Speedway on Saturday night at Hampton, Virginia. Lee Pulliam was also in attendance and went winless on the night he was crowned a four-time NASCAR Whelen All-American Series champion.

Facing an eight-point deficit to Waltz in the track standings, Greg Edwards needed a perfect night. Instead, he won the first half of the twin-66s but saw his title hopes fade with an expired engine on Lap 22 of the second feature.

Finishes of second and fourth was more than enough to clinch. It was Waltz first Langley track championship and it came in the track’s first season back after a one-year hiatus.

“Thankfully, we were able to keep it one piece,” Waltz said. “I just want to thank everyone that supports us and this track. This season has been a great team effort. This feels like my first Late Model win, man.”

Waltz ended his season with two wins, 11 top-10s and 13 top-5s.

Hall enjoyed good speed all afternoon but won the second twin due in part to an incident he suffered in the first. He turned just 25 laps in the first half due to a broken track bar. Having to start on the same tires from the first race meant that everyone else in the field had 41 more laps on their rubber.

Pulliam led for much of the second twin but just couldn’t hold off Hall on his fresher tires.

“That’s now how I expected to win my first one,” Hall said. “I was sitting on a lawn chair during that first race thinking we were done. We still have a problem. It was still bugged out as we celebrated. I just don’t know what to say.”

Hall has previously won Late Model Stock features at Carteret County and Dominion, but this is the biggest win of his career, especially coming against the reigning national champion and the weekly fields at Langley.

“It’s been a long time coming,” Hall said. “We’ve been wrecked, spun, had problems here. But I’m glad it paid off. We’ve finally done it here.”
