In the background of Daytona Speedweeks, the first NASCAR championships of 2017 will be determined after seven races in nine nights at the World Series of Asphalt at New Smyrna Speedway.
The high speed half-mile is located just 15 miles south from Daytona International Speedway and has long been a popular venue for racing die-hards and for short trackers to test their skills in advance of The Great American Race.
The event showcases daily features for Super Late Models, Pro Late Models, Tour-Type Modifieds and Florida Modifieds. The NASCAR K&N Pro Series East will also start their season at NSS during the course of the World Series of Asphalt and the overall event runs from February 9-17.
The first six Super Late Model races at the track will be 35-laps in length and featured on the undercard for six of the first seven nights, all leading up to the PPG/Tower Sealants 100 on Saturday, February 17, which will serve as the main event of the night and the championship race for the division.
Several of the top Super Late Model drivers in the country, including Stephen Nasse, Jeff Choquette, Ty Majeski and Harrison Burton are expected to compete in at least one of the races and many of them will compete for the World Series championship.
Burton became the 16th different World Series Super Late Model champion in 16 years, defeating Majeski and Nasse. He joined Dick Trickle, Mark Martin, Pete Hamilton and David Rogers as titleholders. It kick-started a season that also saw him win the K&N Pro Series East championship.
“It’s pretty high on my personal list of accomplishments,” Burton said. “The competition here is incredible. We won two races and it just said a lot about where we were as a team at that point.”
Now he hopes to become the first driver since Pete Orr (1992-1994) to repeat as Speedweeks champion.
For just the fourth time in event history, the World Series of Asphalt will also have a free online streaming broadcast on FansChoice.tv. The schedule and entry lists for the World Series can be found below.
