Carson Brown Dominates Summer Showdown at Evergreen Speedway for First CARS Tour West Victory

Carson Brown led every lap from the pole to win Saturday night’s 14th annual Summer Showdown at Evergreen Speedway, picking up his first career CARS Tour West Super Late Model victory.

“I feel like the track just came to us all night,” Brown said. “I felt like as it cooled down, the track was just getting tighter and tighter and playing to our advantage. The car was firing off really good, just trying to work lap cars there in the longer stints. There were probably the longest green flag runs I’ve ever had in a super late model, just with how big the track is and just a few cautions. Struggling to work over a few lap cars, but felt like we did everything we needed to just to stay out front, just to keep the leverage and track position we needed in clean air.”

The Anthony Campi Racing driver won the pole earlier in the afternoon and led the 25-car field to the green flag for the 200-lap feature.

Keelan Harvick started 11th after crashing during practice Friday afternoon. The Rackley WAR team worked through the night to convert the Pro Late Model his dad, Kevin Harvick, raced to a second-place finish Friday night into a Super Late Model for Saturday’s race.

Harvick worked his way up to fifth during the opening 70 laps and was in a tight battle with teammate Vito Cancilla for the position when Cancilla spun off Turn 4 on Lap 72. Race officials determined there was contact between the two, sending Harvick to the rear and joining Cancilla at the back of the field for the restart.

Bryce Bezanson had worked his way up to sixth after battling Haeden Plybon for much of the first half of the race. However, his night took a turn for the worse when he suffered a cut tire on Lap 95 and slammed into the Turn 3 wall. Bezanson was okay, but the heavy damage ended his night. The caution also served as the halfway competition break.

When the race resumed for the final 100 laps, Ethan Ebert lined up alongside Brown for the restart. Ebert and Brown made contact entering Turn 1 as soon as the green flag dropped before banging doors later in the lap down the backstretch and into Turn 3.

Brown drove deep into the corner and slid up the track as Ebert attempted to cross him over. The two made contact again in the middle of Turns 3 and 4, with Ebert suffering damage to the right-front valance. Both drivers were able to continue.

Brown held onto the lead while Jace Hansen eventually made his way around Ebert for second. Hansen was unable to close the gap to Brown, who crossed the finish line five seconds ahead to complete a flag-to-flag victory, becoming the second driver in the events history to do so since Cameron Hayley in 2014.

Harvick charged back through the field after being sent to the rear and made his way up to third by the end of the night. Ebert, despite the damage, held on to finish fourth, while Buddy Shepherd rounded out the top five.

Hansen and Harvick entered the weekend separated by seven points in the Super Late Model standings. With Hansen finishing second and Harvick third, the championship battle will come down to the final race of the season at the Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in November.

Harvick’s third-place finish capped off a weekend that saw his team work through the night before he twice drove through the field during the race.

“Today just wouldn’t be possible without all my crew guys,” Harvick said. “They stayed up all night long just to give me this opportunity to race so all the props to them. We missed final practice, got five laps before qualifying and qualified 11. We went back through the field twice in this race and still finished inside the top three. It was a weekend I learned a lot but the race was still a lot of fun”
