Kaden Honeycutt takes I-95 Showdown victory at Southern National Motorsports Park

Once Kaden Honeycutt passed Keelan Harvick for the lead, he never looked back as he took the victory in the third round of the I-95 Showdown at Southern National Motorsports Park on Saturday.

Honeycutt, who had come to Southern National fresh off a runner-up finish in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at Rockingham Speedway on Friday, was the fastest car in qualifying.  However, after a redraw, he had to start in the second position and was relegated to third in the opening laps.  Honeycutt was able to bide his time and work past both Matt Cox and Keelan Harvick to take the lead – and the win.

“I wouldn’t be able to do this without all my guys who helped,” Honeycutt said.  “Great adjustments.  Josh [Yeoman] did a great job on the package this weekend.  I think it really helped out for sure.  I thought it was a lot better than Speed Week so we’re going to keep on building it and apply it to our second car.  Matthew [Leprade] did a really good job tonight.  Was happy to see his progress.  We’ll keep on digging.  It’s a great start for this team and we’ll see if we can get some more.”

Harvick, who is the son of 2014 NASCAR Cup Series champion and FOX Sports broadcaster Kevin Harvick, led 35 of the race’s opening 40 laps before surrendering the lead to Honeycutt.  After fading to third, Harvick raced his way to a runner-up finish when Cox was sidelined due to a faulty plug wire less than 10 laps from the finish.

“Kevin Harvick, Inc. brought me a really good car,” Harvick said after the race.  “There are a couple things on my part that I need to clean up for next time.  The car was a little too free for my liking but I probably should have saved a little more tire.  [Honeycutt] was really fast.  Really good job all weekend.”

Casey Kelly finished in the third position while Matthew Laprade was fourth and Hunter Brown, in his first Late Model Stock Car appearance, rounded out the top-five.

The next round of the I-95 Showdown will take place on Saturday, May 23 at Florence Motor Speedway in South Carolina.
