Dawson Sutton won the final race of Five Flag Speedway’s Blizzard Series and Cole Butcher took home the championship, giving him a guaranteed starting spot in the Snowball Derby this year.
Sutton started the 100-lap race from the pole and led every lap en route to the win. It is his first win in the Southern Super Series and in the Blizzard Series.
“It was an amazing night,” Sutton said after the win. “It was an amazing weekend, actually. My team brought me an amazing car, just like normal. These guys work their butts off night and day, and they build race cars like this. I’m just lucky enough to race them. I’m super thankful for all my guys. We just had a dominant car tonight and I’m excited to come back to the Derby”
“I was so confident tonight, just because this is my favorite racetrack. Ever since the first time I came here, I’ve just loved it. I feel like we always bring good race cars here and everywhere. It’s my job to drive them, and I feel like I did a good job tonight, controlling 100 laps, and I feel like we were just pretty dominant.”
Momentum is on his side heading in the Snowball Derby in a few months.
“It’s crown jewel season,” Sutton said. “I’m looking forward to some of those bigger races that I’ve always wanted to win, like [the] Winchester 400. I’ve always wanted to win Glass City, and lucky enough, I won that last weekend, so hopefully [we’ll] just keep the momentum rolling, and I feel like we’re just really dominant right now. These guys just build amazing race cars, and I’m super thankful for that.
“Hopefully we can go to Winchester here in a few weeks, and then go to the Derby here, and All-American, of course, and hopefully pull off some big wins.”
While Butcher wanted more than a fifth place finish, it was enough to win the championship. He won the first three races of the series. Even though he missed out on winning all four races, Butcher was happy to win the championship.
“[I] can’t thank everyone over at Wilson Motorsports, my whole team [enough],” Butcher said after the race. “[We] definitely struggled this weekend. We just kept getting really free after 10 laps. It is what it is. [You] can’t win them all. We look forward to the rest of the season.
“I feel like we’ve been the car to beat all year. It’s just really hard to pass. I was just too free. It was fun starting in the back. Congrats to Dawson Sutton. They were definitely the car to beat today. They were pretty quick all weekend. We’ll move on. We’ve got Winchester, All American, the [Governer’s] Cup, and the Derby. Very big races ahead of us and we look forward to getting there.”
Carson Brown finished second and Matthew Craig completed the podium. Jake Finch finished fourth ahead of Butcher. Kevin Harvick finished 12th in just his second career Blizzard Series start.
The 58th Snowball Derby will take place December 5-7 at the track. The Snowball Derby Preview is on November 22, the last chance for teams to get on the track before the Derby.
