ASA STARS rolls into Hickory for Thursday show

As is becoming a tradition of sorts, the ASA STARS National Super Late Model Tour takes advantage of the Coca-Cola 600 weekend with NASCAR stars already at home to draw their participation in a mid-week race at Hickory Motor Speedway.

This year it’s Chase Elliott as the Cup Series headliner, as he pairs up with longtime friend, mentor and collaborator Ricky Turner in a Fr8 Auctions No. 9, in a race that now has a title sponsor in the Ross & Witmer 255.

ASA now has a loyalty program designed to keep drivers on the road with the STARS National Tour even if they have fallen out of the championship hunt and its proven to be successful when looking at the standings.

For example, Bubba Pollard has had a rough trio of races to open the national championship but has entered the races this week anyway. What will be interesting will be seeing which car he races with as he has both VanDoorn and Senneker chassis under his camp right now.

Cole Butcher is starting to run away with this championship, leading Wilson Motorsports teammate Gavn Boschele by 50, but the likes of Stephen Nasse, Matt Craig, Carson Brown and Dawson Sutton could get back in the mix with some strong runs.

Of note, Johnny Sauter is shown on the entry list for Richie Wauters but the team has made inquiries about having a paid driver join the team at Hickory with Sauter elsewhere occupied and still scheduled to make numerous other starts this season.

This race also counts towards Southern Super Series points but Butcher is starting to run away with that too, 42 points ahead of Boschele, 44 over Pollard and 73 ahead of Nasse. Colby Howard is also running full-time in the southern regional tour and he is 76 out of that points lead.

A Legends car event will also be paired with the Super Late Models and the location made it an easy entry for Keelan Harvick and Brexton Busch — both set to race each other on the undercard.

There is a practice day set for Wednesday and racing is set for Thursday. The event airs live on the ASA TrackTV service.

Kevin Harvick is the grand marshall.

To Matt Weaver : I would like to work for you to expand your Short Track Scene per internet followers. The increase in readership will lead to more advertisers.
My plan is to organize the ENTRY Level division that most tracks either have or will be going to, That would be the divisions using Crown Vics/Mercury Marquis. As people have found out these cars plentiful and are relatively affordable. .
That is correct, I plan on organizing a National series. These cars are capable of racing on dirt as well as asphalt. To keep expenses to a minimum these cars will not compete on any track larger than a 4/10th of a mile. A True Short Track Series.
THE KEY TO ITS SUCCESS: The cars WILL Allow interchange of bodies to create a THROW BACK to the Golden years of racing allowing AMC, Dodge, Chrysler, Plymouth, Ford, Lincoln Mercury, and GM, Chevy Buick, Olds Pontiac, and Cadillac bodies from 1955 to 1986.
The Stock Ford/Merc frame may be shortened to shorter wheelbase body. Stock front suspension parts, heavy duty disc brakes using weight jacks and allowing option to use truck trailing arms, coil springs with weight jacks on the rear suspension also allow Ford Heavy Duty disc brakes. The very widely used 4 point rear suspension.
The engine may use factory cast iron blocks, 4 bbl carb, and headers, no dry sump systems and no aftermarket electronic systems allowed.
To keep these cars from getting too expensive, the steel wheels will be limited to 8 inch steel wheels on the left and 10 inch steel wheels on the right. A Series Hard compound tire or series allowed selected DOT street tires. The Body must appear to be stock and fiberglass parts will not be allowed. The minimum weight will include the drivers weight. Minimum wheelbase and minimum weights as well as other rules will determine a cars eligibility. Just logical. common sense along with rules for safety will be used to try to allow as many cars as possible to enter National events.
This would be a Race of Champions” where the drivers ability are more important than the car. This series is designed to SHOWCASE a Drivers Talents and not the depth of the car owners pockets. Yes its a throwback series to the Golden Age of Racing. A highly competitive series that will be interesting and exciting to watch.
Mr. Weaver, please reach out to me to discuss this project. Thank You
