Southern Super Series Postpones, SRL National on at Mobile

There will be just one marquee southern Super Late race on Saturday

Matthew Bishop

The much-ballyhooed double is not happening.

Southern Super Series and Watermelon Capital Speedway have postponed the Georgia Spring Nationals to a later date citing impending rain over the weekend. This means there is no longer a date conflict between it and the SRL National event at Mobile International Speedway that was going to result in Bubba Polllard, Jake Finch and Casey Roderick flying back and forth to compete across both on Saturday night.

Instead, the SRL National event will likely pick up a few additional cars this weekend and Southern Super Series and Watermelon Capital Speedway have stated an intent to reschedule to a later date.

This also means the much-anticipated Pollard versus Roderick rematch from the inaugural ASA STARS event last month at Five Flags Speedway will take place at just Mobile on Saturday night. It saves both teams an expensive game of oneupsmanship that had started to develop with Pollard riding on the Phoenix Construction plane owned by James Finch.

Anthony Campi Racing had anticipated riding on that plane, but the idea was not approved by the Phoenix camp. Campi then sough out a ‘bigger and faster’ plane that could beat Finch and Pollard into Mobile, something that needled to Finch to consider pulling out his fastest plane to get his son and Pollard to Mobile even faster.

It was incredible behind-the-scenes theater, but now the calculation is much simpler, in just going to the Irvington half-mile and winning the race straight-up — preferably head-to-head over the other.  It’s a legitimately intense and palpable racing feud.

At the same time, the SRL National race — not to mention a crowded spring schedule that included the STARS event and the Rattler 250 — had put a strain on the Southern Super Series car count and that likely played a factor into the decision to call the race on Thursday morning before teams started to make the trip.

The event will air on Pit Row TV and SPEARS Racing TV — available to subscribers of either service.

As of now, these are the teams entered into the Davidson Electric 125 at Mobile.
