It’s surprising that it took four years for someone to go back to the very beginning of Late Model Stock competition in the Throwback 276 at Hickory Motor Speedway.
Jonathan Findley will do just that on July 31 at the Birthplace of the NASCAR Stars.
Findley and his family owned team will pay homage to the car that won the first ever Late Model Stock race at Old Dominion Speedway in 1980. That’s when track owner Dickie Gore launched a new division to serve as an affordable alternative to the Late Model Sportsman.
The Late Model Sportsman was soon becoming a NASCAR touring car and the Late Model Stock would become the car of choice for weekly tracks across the Mid-Atlantic.

Findley’s grandfather, John Findley, and partner Alton Dailey formed a team and repurposed a 1968 Ford Falcon for that first race in March 1980. Dailey’s and John Findley’s No. 41 would go on to win that race over twenty other Late Model Stock Car rides hitting the track for the first time.
Findley will pay tribute to that heritage and vision from 41 years ago – the same number his team runs.
