Take a look at his Racing Reference page, and you’ll find that Ken Schrader has raced just about every single type of race car you can think of: Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series cars, Xfinity cars, Trucks, Pinty’s Series predecessor CASCAR, the Whelen Modified Tour, ARCA and a whole lot more.
Of course, that doesn’t include the countless short track events that Schrader has competed in.
He’s a guy who just craves racing, a folk hero to many at short tracks across America.
On Wednesday night, Schrader will be driving in the Northeastern Midget Association Lite event at Seekonk Speedway for the Seymour family. The 50-lap race Schrader will compete in is being held in memory of Dave Steele, a longtime Midget racer who was killed in a wreck back in March of 2017 at the age of 42.
The race is a meaningful one for Schrader to be a part of.
“We’re friends with the Seymours,” he said. “That’s what got us up here, and it being the Dave Steele race. Whole lot of reasons to be here.”
Seekonk Speedway has been a track Schrader has been trying to get to for a while now.
“It’s Seekonk, too. There’s a dozen short tracks, you mention the name, you go ‘oh, I’ve heard a lot about it, but I haven’t been there,’ and this is definitely one of those.”
The issues with many asphalt short tracks across the country, Schrader says, come down to tracks properly promoting and marketing the on-track product they have.
“I know this place is doing stuff right,” he said. “I think there’s a lot more you can do with an asphalt track [than with dirt]. It’s just all about marketing and this place is doing it.”
Schrader’s outlook for tonight’s 50-lapper? Win it.
“Well, hell, we’re here,” Schrader said. “Might as well try to win the damn thing.”
Ken Schrader will try to get back into Victory Lane in a one-off appearance with the Seymour family at Seekonk Speedway.
