A couple of days ago, Spencer Davis and his team weren’t even sure they were staying to chase the Super Late Model championship during the World Series of Asphalt. Late Tuesday night, around 2 a.m., the decision was made to stick it out
On the penultimate night of the series, that decision paid off.
Davis tracked down Jade Avedisian with eight laps to go, cleared her for the lead, and drove away to his first Super Late Model win of the week — and perhaps more importantly — extended his points lead heading into the finale.
“We were all talking about it after getting showered up in the ASA race,” Davis told FloRacing “We talked it over with Jimmy Kitchens, Ben Kennedy, Ben Odom over there Nexus. I’m like, hey, it’s just 2 more sets of tires. Were already here, right?
“We’ve been working for this for a while. This GMS race car has just been on the rails. Tony Eury Jr., Tony Eury Sr., this whole group — we’ve been on a tear since we switched over. It was only a matter of time. There’s no better place to do it than Speedweeks.”
After Tuesday’s wreck-filled Clyde Hart Memorial 200 trimmed the field to just 12 cars for Race 4 of the Super Late Model portion, the night went exponentially smoother.
Avedisian got the jump at the start and controlled the early portion of the race, surviving multiple restarts and giving the rest of the field a carrot to chase.
By halfway, Avedisian still led, Davis clear into second, he set his sights on Avedisian. With 20 laps to go, Davis was locked in — running lower than anyone else on the track, nearly painting the yellow line with his left-side tires. With 15 laps remaining, he had caught the No. 24.
Eight laps to go, Davis cleared Avedisian off the corner and drove off into the New Smyrna night, scoring his second career Super Late Model win at the World Series and stretching his championship advantage entering the final night.
Avedisian, always direct, gives her analysis.
“He was just better, flat out,” she said on the FloRacing broadcast. “I got a little free and didn’t have the drive off the corner I needed. We’ll just have to be perfect tomorrow and dominate. Yeah, if that’s enough, that’s enough.”
The runner-up keeps her within striking distance, but now the math and momentum favors Davis.
Behind them, Anthony Bello scored his best finish of the week with a podium run, continuing his progression in the Super Late Models with Fetcho Motorsports.
“You know, I like to dip my toe in a little bit of everything,” Bello told FloRacing “I’m really making the most of these supers, you know, I love these super late models, and to put it on the podium tonight for Fetcho Motorsports is really a big thing.”
One night remains.
And a championship Davis almost didn’t chase is now his to lose.
