Ben Sumner returns to Cordele as operations manager

Ben Sumner is returning to Cordele Motor Speedway to serve as operations manager following the mutual departure of Ricky Brooks announced on Monday.

Sumner served in a similar capacity at what was then called Watermelon Capital Speedway under the ownership of the Lyle family, who sold the track to Greg and Lori Noland in January 2024.

The decision has been in the works for several weeks now but the decision was made in a way to get the venue through its CARS Tour date over the weekend.

“Racing has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember,” Sumner wrote in a statement. “I grew up around the track with my family and have seen it through the hands of many owners over the years. It’s always felt like home.

“Denise and I had the privilege of working at the speedway under the Lyles’ ownership. We poured our hearts into that place, and it became more than just a job — it was our passion, our community, and our second home.

“Now, after some time away, we’re beyond excited to be back doing what we love most. The track holds so many memories for us, and we’re looking forward to making even more with the racers, fans and families that make this sport so special.”

Matt Weaver is the owner and founder of Short Track Scene. Weaver grew up in the sport, having raced himself before becoming a reporter in college at the University of South Alabama. He also has extensive experience covering NASCAR, IndyCar and Dirt Sprint Cars.
