The dream season continued for Anthony Campi Racing on Saturday night as Colby Howard won the Show me the Money Pro Late Model Series ‘Spring Explosion 100’ at Montgomery Motor Speedway.
The run of success for ACR dates back to the Snowflake 100 in December when Chase Purdy won a rain-delayed affair. Then Giovanni Bromante took the team’s Super Late Model program to back-to-back Southern Super Series victories in the Rattler 250 at South Alabama Speedway and the SERF 100 at Five Flags Speedway.
Howard kept the good times rolling in the Heart of Dixie, taking the lead from Justin South on Lap 50 and never surrendered the lead.
“We had an amazing car all night,” Howard said in Victory Lane. “Save, save, save. They reminded me to save. We let Justin get around. I felt like the time was right to round them and the car was there. Thank you to Anthony Campi for such a good car. This is amazing.”
The only battle for the remainder of the race was for second as Casey Roderick held off a late charge from Alabama 200 winner Augue Grill.
Roderick said he simply didn’t have the car he needed to escape Grill and chase down Howard.
“I’ll take it,” Roderick said. “I’ll take it but this isn’t what we wanted. We come here to win races. We worked hard and we tried to get the car rolling a little bit. Anthony is a good guy and they’ve got a good group of guys. Hats off to them. Right now, they have it going on and we have to get it figured out.”
Meanwhile, Grill just couldn’t get back on the throttle on corner exit, especially once he got behind Roderick and attempted to finish the pass.
“It just wouldn’t turn in the middle and that hurt us once I tried to get back on the gas,” he said. “We got loose off. The lack of practice today hurt us a little bit. All in all, a good night. We’ll take it back to the house and get better.”
