There’s an old saying about “saving the best for last.” That certainly rings true for South Boston Speedway’s season finale on September 17.
There will be 395 laps of racing September 17 with the GCR presents Spaulding Equipment race night. Track championships will be on the line in four divisions plus there is a 150-lap NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour race.
There are twin 75-lap NASCAR Late Model Stock races on tap with Matt Bowling looking to wrap up his second South Boston championship behind eight wins so far this season. Peyton Sellers is lurking behind Bowling in second, some 70 points back. He can catch the leader, but only by dropping to the rear of the field in both races to pick up maximum passing points and hoping Bowling has trouble.
Bowling is still involved in a tight chase for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national championship, making the two races especially important to him.
Joey Throckmorton basically just has to start the 50-lap Limited Sportsman race to capture the championship. He has an amazing 10 wins on the season, and an 11th victory would secure him a spot in South Boston history. The 10 wins ties the mark for single-season victories set by Bruce Anderson in 2006. An 11th would give him the lead.
Johnny Layne has a solid lead in the Budweiser Pure Stock division, needing just to start the race to sew up the championship.
There’s a tight battle in the Budweiser Hornets championship chase headed into the final race of the year. Kenny Mills holds a narrow, 391-388 lead over Todd Garnett with Justin Dawson within striking distance in third with 359.
The powerful NASCAR Whelen Southern Modifieds return to South Boston for their second visit of the season on September 17. George Brunnhoelzl III won back in the spring when the Modifieds made their first South Boston stop of 2016.
Andy Seuss, the two-time tour champion, captured this race a year ago for his third South Boston win and likes his chances this time around
“I’m really excited about returning to South Boston Speedway,” said Seuss, who trails points leader Burt Myers by just 10 points headed into next week’s race. “It’s a track that has always been good to us. I’d really like to win this race and be the final Modified winner on the old pavement before they repave this fall.”
The lineup for September 17 includes Late Model twin 75-lap races, a 50-lap Limited, a 30-lap Budweiser Pure Stock race and a 15-lap Budweiser Hornet race along with the 150-lap Modified event.
