Rowan Pennink plans Thompson Icebreaker comeback

Adam Glanzman | NASCAR

Last weekend, Rowan Pennink missed the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season-opener at Myrtle Beach Speedway due to a late off-season back surgery.

Now, just a few days after the Myrtle Beach race, Pennink has all eyes forward, aiming for a return in race two at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park as part of Icebreaker weekend.

“The doctor cleared me to race if I feel good enough, so I’m hoping to go. I’m pretty sure we are going to be there,” Pennink said Tuesday. “It’s looking good right now.”

The veteran of modified racing is pointing towards some past racing accidents as a possible reason for his injury.

“I assume it was, because I didn’t really do anything where I ever remember hurting my back,” Pennink said. “The only thing I can really put it to is being in too many race car wrecks over the last 10 years.”

In 157 career starts, Pennink has 10 wins, including last year’s Icebreaker driving for Boehler Racing. In 2018, he enters his third season of competition behind the wheel of the iconic No. 3.
