New Hampshire Motor Speedway will add traction compound PJ1 to all four turns this week ahead of its NASCAR event this weekend.

Thus, the NASCAR Whelen Modified All-Star Shootout and Eastern Propane and Oil 100 Whelen Modified Tour races will be affected by this development.

In addition to the PJ1 TrackBite (VHT) treatment on the track’s middle groove, track officials will also run a ‘tire dragon’ across the racing surface. The ‘tire dragon’ is a tire-dragging apparatus that rubs Goodyear rubber into the granite-asphalt surface to provide additional grip into a venue. By dragging the rubber across the top and bottom lanes, the hope is that the typically single-grooved New Hampshire could produce side-by-side racing for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series.

As with the highest level of the sport, it remains to be seen how this will affect the Tour-Type Modifieds as well. The NWMT previously raced on a track with VHT last fall at Bristol Motor Speedway and again this spring at Riverhead Raceway.
