The defending Sunoco Rookie of the Year wants to win.

After posting the second fastest lap in the morning practice session at South Boston Speedway, Tommy Catalano scored his first career NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Mayhew Tools Dominator pole award in qualifying.

The Ontario, New York, driver, posted a fast time of 13.849 seconds (103.979 mph) around the .4-mile Virginia oval. Previous to Saturday, his best starting position in a Whelen Modified Tour event was third at Myrtle Beach two weeks ago.

“This is so huge for us,” he said in the Mayhew Tools pole zone after the session. “We thought we were okay sometimes and then we would end up 15th to 20th. We struggled.

“To come here and qualify on pole is huge. We finished third at Myrtle Beach and were hoping it wouldn’t be a fluke and that this would be a good year. We came here in practice and was .030 off first in practice. We knew we had something. Hopefully we can do this more often. This is awesome.”
