WINSTON SALEM, NC : John Holleman is no stranger to racing wherever and whenever he can. This coming weekend will pose yet another obstacle as Holleman will compete at two different tracks, in two different states and two different series.
It all starts this Friday, April 29th at the famed Bowman Gray Stadium with pole qualifying for the season opener for the Sportsman Late Models 40 lap event. The cars will practice and time trial on Friday night to lock into the main event that will be run Saturday evening. If Holleman can qualify in the top six positions, then he will redraw on Saturday to determine where he starts in that top half dozen.
Saturday will begin the 180-mile round trip from Winston Salem, NC to Virginia International Raceway in Alton, VA for the 5th race of the 2016 NASCAR K&N Pro Series East campaign and then back to Winston-Salem for the Sportman feature. The K&N Pro Series East event features practice and qualifying early in the day before the 3:45 PM green flag to begin the 55 lap race around the 2.25-mile road course.
If all things go well on Saturday at VIR, Holleman’s plan is to be on the road by 5:30pm with his K&N Pro Series East spotter Tony White. Just like Holleman, White has obligations at Bowman Gray Stadium on Saturday night spotting for various drivers.
“After the race I am going to put all my gear in Tony’s car and we are going to head to the Stadium. He has to spot for other drivers so we both will be on a mission to get there in time,” said Holleman on his adventure.
The 40 lap Sportsman feature will go green at straight up 8 PM to open the 2016 racing season for the 68th season at NASCAR’s oldest racing facility.
This weekend’s events are the most challenging geographically for Holleman as he chases the Sunoco Rookie of the Year title in the K&N Pro Series East and the Sportsman track championship at Bowman Gray Stadium.
Holleman competed a test at VIR just a couple weeks ago in preparation for this weekend’s NASCAR event and feels confident in the potential of a good run.
“I feel real good going into the race this week,” said Holleman. “I was running 1.34.000 and every time out I got faster and faster. Not once was I slower than my previous run.”
When asked about the outlook for the Bowman Gray Stadium season Holleman is very excited to get going.
“Baity’s Tire has come on board in a big way to support me at the Stadium and that revolves around running the full season and for the championship. We tested last week on last year’s tires and we were hooked up. I don’t think anyone was turning the lap times we were.”
“I hope to get at least 6 wins this year as we are scheduled to run 26 races with the doubles that we have. Coming off 4 wins in 2015 in an abbreviated schedule, our car is dialed in to start the season.”
To keep up with Holleman’s eventful day he will have his social media on constant update as the team travels from Winston-Salem to VIR and back all in one day. You can follow him on Facebook at Facebook.com/JohnHollemanMotorsports and on Twitter at @JHollemanMotors.
