Danny Bohn wasn’t sure if he was going to get a Bowman Gray Stadium win this season in a part-time effort running the Winston-Salem bullring but emerged victorious in the WGHP FOX8 100 on Saturday night.
He was feeling even less sure with a car that hasn’t been to his liking in his appearances this season and even less sure when he redrew the 15th starting spot before the race.
It took until Laps 56-to-60 to get to the front, battling Brandon Ward for the lead and taking it with a crossover, but Bohn is back to Victory Lane at the Madhouse and scored his 19th career victory in the process.
“Yeah, we’ve struggled a little bit. You know, we run the same stuff over here for so long and it’s worked until it doesn’t work,” Bohn told Short Track Scene after the race. “So we changed a bunch of stuff. We came over here in the morning and changed a bunch of stuff, put some tires on it, got a good baseline and felt better about it. I didn’t know if we had enough to win and then we drew 15th so then it was ‘well, hopefully we can at least go forward’
“Got lucky there on that first caution and picked up a bunch of spots, which was nice because we were fighting tight, and with the longer race, got it to stay neutral.”
Ward battled Bohn hard but is also the points leader intending to keep it with now three weeks left to go.
“I try to run everyone clean,” Ward said. “I was outside of him and he ran all over me left front and I was … it’s just hard racing. It was nice to win one because I was starting to question if I was going to get one here this year. Glad to be back. Got to thank my car owner because we spent on some new things this week and it paid off.”
Lee Jeffreys, who had the fastest qualifying time, alongside Burt Myers and Chris Fleming each elected to go to the back of the field to attempt a $3,000 ‘ultimate challenge.’ Jeffreys was eliminated in a first lap stack-up and Myers could only advance to seventh.

Lynn back in a big way

Amber Lynn returned to victory lane at Bowman Gray Stadium after retiring and then returning last year from a cyst found in her brain.
Lynn won the second Sportsman Division 20-lapper after Tommy Neal and Sterling Plemmons came together and eliminated each other from contention on the fourth lap. It was her 16th career victory in her first race back.
“It took me a few laps this morning (in practice) to get used to it but I took to it pretty good,” Lynn said.
Lynn finished sixth in the opening 20-lap race and then lined up in third for the second one.
Lynn managed to fend off championship leader Chase Robertson, while Zack Ore, the winner of the first Sportsman race, finished in third. Mitch Gales took fourth and Robbie Brewer rounded out the top five. Despite a few close moments with Robertson right on her tail, Lynn was able to stay disciplined and close out.
“I was just taking it as one lap, one corner, one peddle push at a time,” Lynn said about her strategy. “This win means a lot and I came from not racing all year to winning in my first night back and I know it means a lot to my family and friends who have stuck with me through this health journey.”
In the opening Sportsman Division 20-lapper, Ore, the defending champion of the division, made a late move on leader Austin Jones and held on to secure the win.
This was Ore’s fourth victory of the season. He mentioned that despite some early contact with Justin Taylor, he was able to keep it together. Both drivers did a great job of recovering from the incident and stayed in the hunt throughout the race.
“If we could get to the front, I knew we would hold them off because after last week we needed this in a big way,” Ore said. “Hopefully this will help and get us in the right direction.”
Jones wound up second with Taylor third and Gales fourth and Robertson was fifth.
