Dominion Raceway in Spotsylvania, Virginia was once again the site of yet another exciting Late Model Stock Car feature at the new 4/10-mile oval that welcomed its first repeat winner in NASCAR Whelen All-American Series competition.

Nick Smith, came into the race ranked as the 11th best NASCAR Whelen All-American Series driver in the state of Virginia and picked up his second victory of the season at the Dominion Raceway to go along with his four top five finishes at the new “Gem of the Commonwealth”.  Jeff Oakley, winner of the previous race, the Comserve Wireless Memorial Day Classic Late Model Stock Car feature and 16th ranked NASCAR Whelen All-American Series in Virginia, led most of the 75 laps and looked to have a win secured.

That all changed on the restart, as Smith got a good jump on Oakley and led as the field took the white flag and from there, it was history as Nick Smith took his No.12 to victory lane in a race that, until the final lap was largely uneventful.  The event featured only one other caution, one that came for debris about halfway through the 75-lap feature event.

“We had nothing for Oakley after about two laps,” Smith said.  “He had the car to beat but ran him hard on the outside on the final restart and knew that it was the only way to beat Oakley.”

Oakley, who qualified on pole led the majority of the race and looked to have the race won as he came off turn four for the final time.  However, a collision between the No. 7 of Michael Hardin and No.88 of Doug Barnes forced the field to go to a Green-White-Checkered finish, giving Nick Smith and a host of others one final shot at the Jeff Oakley whom, to this point in the race had looked flawless.

After all the dust settled and Smith took the checkered flag, he admitted that the battle with Oakley “wore him out” and that Smith “really had to work for this one.”

Smith knows his car is not perfect, acknowledging he “has some work to do” but is going to “enjoy being able to pull this one out.”
