Anthony Alfredo was expected to contend for a grandfather clock in his first visit to Martinsville Speedway, but instead was forced to withdraw before the lights could even come on for Late Model Stock qualifying.

His JR Motorsports No. 8 was forced to park in the pit area an hour into practice with a noticeable fluid pool forming underneath his Chevrolet built motor.

What happened?

“We just blew up,” he said.

The year-long CARS Tour championship leader was 59th overall, with a 20.805, but the fastest times were turned after the track cooled in the twilight hours. Overall, he was pleased with his pace on the afternoon.

“We were right there with Josh, when we matched notes,” Alfredo said. “It’s a shame because even though this was my first time here, I felt really good about what we had.

“I really wanted to be a part of this first night race. I just don’t have much luck in these big races, I guess.”

Next up for Alfredo is the October 14 CARS Tour championship race. Alfredo is third in the standings, nine points behind Layne Riggs. Teammate Josh Berry is just a single point back.
