67 drivers on early Martinsville entry list

Ken Childs

67 drivers will chase a grandfather clock in Late Model Stock Car racing’s richest and most prestigious event, the ValleyStar Credit Union 300 at Martinsville Speedway.

The entry list features a wide variety of championship winning drivers, CARS Tour competitors, and regional racers from tracks across the Carolinas and Virginia. However, one name stands out the most, and that is Lee Pulliam.

Pulliam, who is one of the greatest drivers in the history of the Late Model Stock Car discipline, is looking for his third grandfather clock in what will be his first race since 2020. He won the race in controversial fashion in 2011 with a last lap bump-and-run on Matt McCall, who is now a crew chief for Brad Keselowski in the NASCAR Cup Series. Pulliam also won the event in 2014.

Former NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series driver Timothy Peters, winner of the 2005 and 2017 installments of the ValleyStar Credit Union 300, is also set to return to the cockpit of a Late Model Stock Car next Saturday night.

Headliners from the CARS Tour competing in the race include two-time zMAX CARS Late Model Stock Tour champion Carson Kvapil, current points leader and South Boston 200 winner Connor Hall, three time series champion Bobby McCarty, and multi-time winner Brent Crews.

The last three winners of the ValleyStar Credit Union 300 are also among the 67 drivers entered. Trevor Ward stunned the racing world a year ago as he stormed to victory in thrilling fashion. In 2022, Peyton Sellers finally broke through for his first Martinsville win. Landon Pembelton, who will be driving for Lee Pulliam this season, won the race in 2021 in one of the biggest upsets in the 38 year history of the fall classic.

Six different states are represented in the entry list, including North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Maryland, and Florida.

Qualifying for the ValleyStar Credit Union 300 will take place on Friday night, September 27. Heat races will set the field on the afternoon of September 28, then the 200-lap feature race will commence at 7:00pm that evening.
