Turner Brown overcomes early spin to win Shootout 100 in CARS Tour Northwest Pro Late Model debut

Turner Brown made his first career Pro Late Model start one to remember, overcoming an early spin and passing Kevin Harvick with 34 laps remaining to win the CARS Tour Northwest Shootout 100 at Evergreen Speedway on Friday night.

The teenager charged back through the 26-car field after spinning on Lap 2, then pulled away from Harvick in the closing laps to earn his first career Pro Late Model victory.

“It’s just unbelievable,” Brown said. “The guys gave me an unbelievable car and honestly, I lost my head a bit on lap two and I was just able to regroup and I was able to take the checkered flag.” 

Wyatt Gardner won the pole over Harvick earlier in the afternoon and led the field to the green flag in the 100 lap feature. Harvick quickly took control, moving into the lead by the time the pair exited Turn 2 on the opening lap.

One lap later, Brown slid into the door of Haley Constance entering Turn 1 while fighting for fifth and spun into the infield grass. He continued without damage but restarted at the rear of the field.

Gardner’s night unraveled shortly after the restart. The fourth-place driver in the Northwest Pro Late Model standings began dropping through the field from second before bringing his car to pit road with a mechanical problem, ending his night.

The race then settled into a battle between Harvick and Haeden Plybon, with the pair building a sizable advantage over third-place Ethan Ebert.

That battle ended on Lap 20 when Alex Boyatt spun off Turn 2. Harvick checked up as the leaders reached the scene, while Plybon locked the rear brakes trying to avoid both Harvick and Boyatt and spun into the outside wall. The contact caused heavy damage to the left side of Plybon’s car and ended the Northwest points leader’s night.

Plybon entered the night holding a three point advantage over Andrew Riehl and an eight point lead over Ethan Ebert in the CARS Tour Northwest Pro Late Model standings. With Riehl finishing seventh, Ebert 10th and Plybon credited with 24th, the results will shake up the championship battle with two races remaining in the season.

A red flag followed three laps later after Naima Lang suffered a mechanical failure entering Turn 3 and slid in his own oil before hitting the outside wall. Ken Bonney, Logan Cole, Kyle Lang and Dempsey Graham were also collected in the incident.

Once racing resumed, Brown began slicing through the field. He reached the top 10 and continued forward, moving into second with 60 laps remaining before catching Harvick with 42 to go.

Brown stayed within a few car lengths of Harvick as they worked through lapped traffic. He repeatedly closed on the entry to Turn 1, but Harvick continued to gain enough ground off the corner to hold the lead.

With 34 laps remaining, Brown saw his opportunity as the leaders approached the lapped car of Kenley Sleveland. Knowing Harvick had favored the high lane, Brown charged into Turn 1 and used Sleveland as a pick, pinning the 2027 NASCAR Hall of Fame inductee behind traffic before completing the pass for the lead.

Brown pulled away from there, leaving Harvick and Constance to battle for second.

Constance worked her way to Harvick’s rear bumper in the closing laps and repeatedly drew alongside him, but Harvick continued to edge ahead off the corners.

Constance’s bid for a runner-up finish ended on the final lap when her car ran out of fuel on the backstretch while running third. Harvick finished second, while Chase Gardner moved past Constance to claim the final spot on the podium. Zach Riehl and Zander Peters completed the top five.

After losing track position at the start of the race, Brown said remaining patient during his drive through the field ultimately put him in position to capitalize when the opportunity came.

“I took it like just learning every lap you know just taking small steps and ultimately it paid off,” Brown said. “Hats off to Kevin, you know, he’s one of my idols in the sport and he raced me very clean. When I saw the lopper go high and I knew that Kevin was running the high line most of the entire race. I just took  my normal line and heard that I was clear on the exit and that worked out perfectly.”
