Monahan dominates Race 3, scores redemption at World Series of Asphalt

Brody Monahan made a statement, putting on an absolute clinic and winning Race 3 for the Pro Late Models at the World Series of Asphalt.

After dominating last night’s race only to come up empty and later be disqualified for left-side weight, Monahan left no doubt Monday night at New Smyrna Speedway, leading 58 of 60 laps to score his second career Pro Late Model victory at the World Series of Asphalt.

The race got off to a rough start. Brandon Lopez jumped out to the early lead over Jayden Johnson, but before the field could settle in, like clockwork, trouble ensued behind them. Wesley Slimp didn’t anticipate the stack-up on the initial start, locked up the brakes and lost control entering Turn 1. At the same time, a completely separate incident unfolded on the backstretch when Todd Delisle and Gage Gilby came together and spun, bringing out the caution on the opening lap.

On the restart, Johnson briefly grabbed the lead from Lopez, but it didn’t take long for Monahan to make his presence known. By lap three, the No. 31 was out front, and once he got there, he was untouchable.

Behind him, the battle for second housed all the action. Vito Cancilla, Jayden Johnson, Conner Jones, and Raphael Lessard traded positions throughout the middle portion of the race with Cancilla and Jones breaking away, but no one had the pace to seriously challenge Monahan out front.

By halfway, Monahan had stretched his advantage and began managing the gap, careful not to overuse his tires in case a late caution reset the field. The yellow never came.

Instead, Monahan cruised to victory, completing a dominant performance that served as redemption after a frustrating start to the week.

“Oh, it’s just so awesome, especially after the week we’ve had,” Monahan said on the FloRacing broadcast. “We’ve had so much speed and really didn’t have a lot to show for it up until this point, so just super thankful for everybody. This car has been ridiculously fast all week.”

Asked if he was pushing too hard during the long green-flag run, Monahan said he was mindful of the possibility of a late caution.

“I was just trying to save as much as I could in case we had a yellow there and I had to race for it. We were pretty much on cruise control once we got to the lead.”

Vito Cancilla continued his string of impressive finishes with a runner-up result. Cancilla came into the night ten points up on Cole Robie in Pro Late Model World Series standings, and with his third podium finish in as many races, Cancilla extended the championship lead.

“I think we’re doing pretty good,” Cancilla told FloRacing. “Wish we would’ve won it. First time here, so I’m still learning how to pass, but Monahan did a really good job. We were just really loose there. I feel like we can get one before the week’s over.”

Jones, the fastest qualifier, didn’t have track position on his side, but still rounded out the podium after fighting a tight-handling car late in the race.

“We dropped down on rear stagger and it kind of killed it. We were just really tight,” Jones said on the broadcast. “Hats off to my guys — they’ve been working day in and day out to get this thing fast. We’ll come back tomorrow and try to get that win.”

Through three races, the Pro Late Model portion of the World Series has delivered everything from survival to outright domination. Behind Monahan, Cancilla and Jones, last night’s winner, Raphael Lessard came home fourth and pole sitter Jayden Johnson rounded out the top five.
