When South Boston Speedway held a Late Model Stock race for the first time since 2019 on March 20, one notable name absent was local regular Trey Crews.
Saturday afternoon firmly re-introduced Crews to the South Boston crowd, as he held off an intense charge from Jacob Borst to pick up a win in the 100-lap Late Model Stock feature.
“That was a good battle between me and Borst there,” Crews said. “We raced against each other in Limiteds so there is much respect between us. I gave him a bump, he gave me a couple and I think that’s what the fans want, which is good hard racing.”
Borst controlled the first 30 laps of the Late Model Stock feature while Crews was tasked with holding off Blake Stallings and the rest of the field for the third position.
A caution for Josh Oakley’s crash enabled Crews to take the lead on the ensuing restart by utilizing the apron to pass Borst and Stuart Crews three-wide coming off Turn 2.
Crews spent the remainder of the feature trying to prevent Borst from passing him back. Once Borst began to fade during the final ten laps, Crews pulled away to bring home the checkered flag.
Borst believed he had done everything right when it came to saving his equipment but he did not mind settling for second after realizing his car was not strong enough to chase down Crews for the win.
“It feels really good to come home second this weekend,” Borst said. “Trey and I have had a lot of fun racing each other over the years and it’s also a lot of fun to race someone instead of riding the whole race. Hopefully we can take this into the following race.”
Crews said he typically does not make bold moves for the lead like the one he pulled on Borst but knew that he might not have gotten the opportunity to get the lead again if he did not take advantage of the circumstances.
“If the door opens, you have to go for it,” Crews said of his maneuver. “You never know when it will present itself to you again, so I felt like it was good to peak in there. I wouldn’t do that every time but I was in a good position there.”
Work commitments will prevent Crews from running a full schedule at South Boston this year but he plans to come back for another checkered flag in June.
