Dillon Moltz’ first Pro All Stars Series win had been a long time coming. So he made a statement out of it.
The New Sharon, Me. veteran dominated Sunday’s PASS North feature at White Mountain Motorsports Park, keeping a hungry D.J. Shaw at bay to score his first PASS win in his 28th feature start.
Moltz has maintained a constant if part-time presence in touring racing in New England since winning the 2014 Granite State Pro Stock Series title. Originally from Connecticut, Moltz and Maine-based team owner Mark Brackett have split their time between PASS and the American-Canadian Tour, placing second in ACT points in 2017 and picking up four ACT Tour wins to boot.
But success in the Super Late Model had been harder to find. Moltz’ best PASS finish, a second-place at WMMP, came back in 2019.
Starting on the front row, Moltz settled into an early lead Sunday afternoon. Shaw, fresh off a GSPSS win at Claremont Motorsports Park, shadowed the dominant Moltz early on, as Gabe Brown was part of a tough battle for third on back. Brown’s afternoon came to an early end on lap 63, with a mechanical failure sending his mount into the frontstretch wall.
That set up another duel between Moltz and Shaw, but Moltz was able to shake free of the five-time PASS North champion. Unchallenged from there, Moltz cruised to a 1.418-second victory over Shaw.
Moltz’ win, his first career PASS checkered flag, was his first touring win since 2020, when he nursed one set of tires to win the ACT Tour’s Midsummer Classic 250 at WMMP.
Shaw, who has finished no worse than sixth in PASS this season, recorded his fifth runner-up finish of the year as he still seeks his first win of the year.
Reigning champion Max Cookson assumed third after Brown’s trouble. In a diverse season that has fallen far short of expectations on all fronts, Cookson scored his first PASS North podium finish of 2024.
Austin Teras drove to fourth, his second top-five finish of the year. Seven-time champion Johnny Clark, who unloaded a backup car after finding engine issues early in practice, fought to a fifth-place finish.
Former ACT Tour champion Jimmy Hebert was sixth, with rookie Brandon Varney and New Hampshire’s Jeremy Davis the only other cars on the lead lap. Garrett Hall finished ninth, while veteran Dennis Spencer, Jr. claimed the final spot in the top ten.
Brown’s midrace heartbreak creates some distance in a three-way battle for the championship, with Shaw and Clark pulling away from the young Granite Stater. Teras, who has fought adversity in his first full PASS North season, is a distant fourth in the points.
Next on the calendar for PASS is a rare non-points race, as the series makes an annual stop at Spud Speedway. Added to the calendar after the initial schedule was released, the Sunday-afternoon bout dangles the carrot of an Oxford 250 provisional for the race winner. The following week is a Saturday show at Seekonk Speedway, putting two of the longest trips for the PASS regulars back-to-back.
But the schedule quickly settles into preparation for the Oxford 250, and a sense of normalcy for the Maine-centric tour.
