Dustin Smith wins at Mobile in Easter Bunny 50

Dustin Smith went to victory lane in the Easter Bunny 50 at Mobile International Speedway on Saturday.

Smith took the lead from Trey Grimes on Lap 5 and the margin of victory was nearly six seconds.

“I can’t thank Okie Mason [enough] for keeping me up on the wheel there,” said Smith in victory lane on the Racing America broadcast. “About halfway, I come over the radio and said I’m about wore out. Mr. Eddie Shoemaker getting me this Rogers-Dabbs 604 crate motor, it’s a hell of a motor. I might just keep it in there.”

Grimes had sorts of issues on the way to the track, his first time visiting the fast Alabama half mile, and was pleased with the result.

“Yesterday evening, we got here about 3:30 after the truck broke down on the way here,” Grimes said. “Turned my first laps on this track yesterday evening. Showed up today and thought we had a pretty good car.

“Didn’t know what to expect, like I say, I hadn’t even been here. I’m so proud of us as a crew and a whole group. We come down here looking to have fun. I honestly didn’t expect to be up here on the frontstretch, but I’ll take it.”

Mobile native Grant Thompson completed the podium.

“Not a bad day,” Thompson said. “It was a last-minute decision we made Thursday night. We spent all day on thrashing on it Friday to get it ready. We showed up today, we weren’t bad in practice and qualifying. We should have made a change we didn’t make, and it bit us on the long run, but we’ll take it.”
