Keith Rocco wins Sunoco Modified opener at Thompson

Thompson Speedway

So far, 2019 has been a perfect start for Keith Rocco–he’s one-for-one when it comes to the races he’s entered.

Rocco held off repeated challenges from Todd Owen to win the Sunoco Modified season opener Icebreaker weekend at Thompson.

Rocco remained up front for almost the entirety of the thirty laps, save for lap six, when Owen dove underneath Rocco in turn one to take the lead. Rocco promptly took the lead back by the end of the next lap, and while Owen remained close to the back of Rocco’s No. 57, he was never able to launch another attack.

“Todd’s good,” Rocco said. “He’s a fierce competitor and he’s going to run me hard. I knew he was going to pressure us the whole race. He wasn’t going to fall off.”

Up next for Rocco will be the Spring Sizzler at Stafford in three weeks, where yet another track title will be the goal.

“I set my expectations high,” Rocco said. “The Icebreaker is the one that gets your momentum rolling. Winning your first race of the season is always good. It just sets the bar.”

It’s going to be a busy year racing-wise for Rocco, who seems to race whenever and wherever he can.

“We’re going to do as much racing as we can,” Rocco said. “We’ll race here, at Stafford, do some Tri-Track stuff, MRS stuff… We’ll be racing quite a bit.”
