Doug Coby tops two NWMT Icebreaker practices at Thompson

Five-Time looks fast back in New England …

Doug Coby’s quest to return to Victory Lane at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park is off to a a perfect start.

The Milford, Connecticut, driver paced both NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour practice sessions ahead of the Icebreaker 150 on Saturday. Coby posted a fastest overall time of 18.554 seconds (121.268 mph), which came in a mock qualifying effort in the second practice. The final session was extended another 25 minutes after fluid on the track forced the red flag early.

Justin Bonsignore, who swept all four Whelen Modified Tour races at Thompson last year, posted the second fastest lap of the day with a lap of 18.603 seconds (120.948 mph).

Kyle Bonsignore, a cousin of Justin, was third fastest with a lap of 18.823 seconds. Matt Swanson was fourth and nine-time Bowman Gray Stadium Modified champion Burt Myers fifth.

Ron Silk was sixth, followed by Dave Sapienza, Jon McKennedy, Tommy Catalano and Rob Summers.

During the first sessions, a lower control arm failure sent Summers into the wall, but the team was able to repair and make laps in the second round.

The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour returns to action on Sunday afternoon, where group qualifying for the Icebreaker 150 will take place at 2:45 p.m. The Icebreaker 150 is slated to take the green flag at 3:45 p.m., and will air live on FansChoice.TV.
