For the third straight night, Matt Hirschman drove the black No. 60 to Victory Lane, winning the Richie Evans Memorial 100 at the World Series of Asphalt in New Smyrna.
From the sixth starting spot, Hirschman sliced through the field with relative ease. By lap 30, Hirschman had entered the top-three. On lap 42, Hirschman made what would be the race-winning pass underneath polesitter Doug Coby entering turn three.
Hirschman would not give up the lead from that point on, despite challenges from Tommy Catalano and Jimmy Blewett.
While Hirschman did come up short in the battle for the championship, the domination put on the field by the No. 60 team during the second half of the week was clearly special to “Big Money” Matt.
“We didn’t end up winning the points… but we kinda dominated the last part of Speedweeks here,” said Hirschman. “I’ve never done that before. This is such a grind. For this week-plus, all eyes in the short track world are on New Smyrna and Speedweeks down here, so this is just so cool.”
The man who did win the Tour Modified points championship, Chuck Hossfeld, did it through consistency and clean racing. Hossfeld’s seventh-place finish Friday night was the lowest of his week.
“This morning, [I] was thinking about the championship meaning more than the race,” said Hossfeld, now a two-time World Series of Asphalt champion. “We had a great week, a fun week. My car is as pretty as when it came. It’s not all beat up like some of these other cars… It just feels great going into a season with a car we built just now, within the last month or so.”
