Jared Fryar says thank you to grandad Freddy in Throwback 276

The paint scheme on Jared Fryar’s car for the Aug. 3-4 CARS Tour Throwback 276 at Hickory (N.C.) Motor Speedway is all about family.

Twenty-four-year-old Fryar will be honoring his grandfather and short-track racing icon Freddy Fryar with the color scheme on his super late model during the second annual event. The wrap on Fryar’s No. 48 is similar to the colors his grandfather flew during the 1965 season, which came in the heart of his successful racing career.

“I felt like it was one of my favorites and it was one he won track championships with and multiple races back in the day at Nashville, which is also one of my favorite race tracks,” Fryar said of his paint scheme choice for the Throwback 276. “It’s really special to me and means a lot to my dad considering that was a big part of our family and obviously I’d call it our family tradition. Our family has been a part of racing forever.”

Known as “The Beaumont Flyer,” Freddy Fryar amassed a staggering 826 victories during his lengthy career. He scored victories across the Southeast, including at tracks in Birmingham, Ala., Huntsville, Ala., Nashville, Tenn., Montgomery, Ala., and Tampa, Fla.

In addition to seven NASCAR track championships, Fryar collected two victories in the historic Snowball Derby at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Fla., in 1979 and ’81. He also made a handful of starts in what is now known as the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. He was also the 1983 All PRO Super Series champion.

“Our family has been a part of racing for 50 years now and we’re at the third generation,” Fryar said. “It means a lot to be able to represent him.”
