Layne Riggs still isn’t over his lost CARS Tour championship.

Nearly five months ago today, the second-generation racer entered the season-finale with a four point championship advantage over Josh Berry. More than likely, all he needed to do was finish and the championship was his based on his 6.2 average finish.

He did everything he was supposed to do, qualifying second to Philip Morris and even leading four laps early in the proceedings.

But disaster struck on a Lap 27 restart, a transmission failure dropping him from the front through the field, eventually making contact with another car. The championship he had led from the second race of the season was lost in the process.

Berry celebrated the championship that night.

“I think about the championship a lot,” Riggs admitted to Short Track Scene. “I thought we had it in the bag. We had tested and had a very fast car. Led some laps. I thought it was shaping up to be a good race, would have been a great way to get my name out there, and that’s not the way anyone ever wants to lose a championship.”

Now a year older, and hopefully a year better, the 15-year-old son of NASCAR veteran Scott Riggs enters Tri-County not as a surprise but as a contender.

“Our goal is to go out and win as many races and hopefully win the championship,” Riggs said. “That’s the goal of a touring driver. We’ve put ourselves up here against the best. We have some of the best competition in the area in CARS Tour and Tri County looks like it will have the best field in series history.

“That’s why we’re here.”
