The Champion Racing Association and Crisp Motorsports Park officials confirmed on Wednesday that Speedfest will return to the Watermelon Capital Speedway on January 27-28.

As per tradition, the event will be held the weekend before the Super Bowl and will feature twin races for the Super and Pro Late Models. This will represent the seventh straight season that Speedfest has taken place in Cordele, Georgia.

The non-points pre-season event has continued to be a success for CRA bosses RJ Scott and Glenn Luckett.

“We are very excited to have CRA SpeedFest once again at Crisp Motorsports Park and to work with Promoter Wayne Lyle,” Scott said. “Wayne and his crew do a great job and we are very pleased to go back to Cordele and interact with all the great staff, racers and fans.”

This is fourth year that the event has taken place in Cordele under the ownership of Wayne Lyle. The track has underwent extensive improvement during that time span, important because the track is currently the only operating asphalt track in the state of Georgia.

Lyle says racers will be greeted with a purse increase next winter.

“Each year we look to continue to make this event one of the top late model events in the country,” Lyle said. “I’m pleased to announce that for CRA SpeedFest 2018 we will pay the Super Late Model event winner $10,000 and second $5,000. We are also raising the Pro Late Model event winner’s purse to $5,000.”

This is the 14th overall Speedfest, an event that previously took place at Lanier International Speedway in Georgia and USA International Speedway in Florida.

Past winners include: Charlie Menard Mike Fritts, Eddie Hoffman, Jeff Choquette, Kyle Busch, Chase Elliott, Bubba Pollard and Harrison Burton.

Matt Weaver is the owner and founder of Short Track Scene. Weaver grew up in the sport, having raced himself before becoming a reporter in college at the University of South Alabama. He also has extensive experience covering NASCAR, IndyCar and Dirt Sprint Cars.
