Before Timothy Peters became an annual NASCAR Camping World Truck Series championship contender for Red Horse Racing, he was a popular Late Model Stock standout in his native Virginia.

Mostly racing at Orange County Speedway, Southampton Speedway and South Boston Speedway, Peters won countless track championships and was considered a top prospect by a handful of NASCAR notables. He’s largely lived up to the promise with 10 Truck Series victories and five top-5 championship finishes.

But he’s never steered too far from his roots running a Late Model Stock Car at Martinsville Speedway and within the Denny Hamlin Short Track Showdown. He even won his CARS Tour debut last summer at Orange County with car owner Barry Nelson.

He didn’t race short tracks as much he wanted last season but is hopeful that he will make up for it in 2017.

“I think so,” Peters said on Wednesday during the NASCAR Media Tour. “I think we’re going to try to hit a couple of races at South Boston. Our Late Model Stock program has really taken off. Last year taking on Brandon Peirce and for 17 we’ll have him and Bobby McCarty.

“I’m really proud of how that has gained traction over the year with me and Barry Nelson starting it. I’m going to try some when I can but I don’t know those dates yet.”

The schedule won’t allow him to compete in a Late Model for the first-ever scheduled night race at Martinsville on September 23 but he believes lights will prove to be a positive at his home NASCAR track.

“There’s a lot of excitement,” Peters said. “I wish I could make it but we plan to be in New Hampshire winning the first round of the playoffs. With that said, I think it’s the greatest thing ever. I love Martinsville. I love the heritage of the track. It’s one of maybe three tracks that built NASCAR. It’s a big footprint in Henry County and the surrounding area.”
