LUCAMA, NC — Chris Chapman outlasted the field to score the victory in the second of two Late Model races at Southern National Motorsports Park 0n Saturday night.

After a six car invert, Rusty Daniels started on the pole while Matt Bowling, winner of the first race, started sixth. Daniels led the first 21 laps until Chris Chapman worked his way around.

By the end of the first half of the race, Bowling worked his way up to third while his closest competitor NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national points competition, Brenden Queen worked his way through the field to the 12th position.

After a plethora of cautions plagued the field, at one point even causing the race to be red-flagged, the field lined up for a five-lap shootout. Chapman did as he had for the entire race up to that point, led the field while Matt Waltz and Brenden Queen were left to fight over second.

Chapman could be considered a surprise victor in a field that was full of heavy hitters, Chapman came into the race not even in the top 20 in points for North Carolina but said

“My team worked really hard on the car,” Chapman said.  “I can’t thak these guys enough, they work their butts off and all I have to do is show up and drive. I’d like to thank all my sponsors, the track crew for getting the race in and my team.”

Chapman, visibly tired and dripping with sweat, said the heat is more of a factor when you are sitting still.

“When you are stopped as long and as often as we were, the heat really starts to get to you and you start sweating everywhere,” Chapman explained.  “When you are racing you don’t think about how hot it is.”

Joined by his family in Victory Lane, Chapman was full of jubilation after the victory not even realizing who he had to hold off to win the race, just knowing that he had to bring it home since he is, in his words the “lucky one who gets to show up and drive this thing every week”.
